#590 Magnificent silver seal insignia of Lady Olwen. High Priestess, Queen of the Witches-circa 1845
(The above is the description as printed in the catalog.) Ripley“s catalog number 8870

Lady Olwin ( Monique Wilson) ( b.? , Died approximately 1982 in Torremolinos)
Doreen Valiente, Pat and Arnold Crowther, Lois Bourne (Hemmings), Jack Bracelin and Monique Wilson where Gardner's first initiates.

"Julia Phillips has reconstructed a "family tree" for Gerald
Gardner; ..... Some of the relationships are more complicated than appear here. For example, Gardner had
several High Priestesses including Doreen Valiente, and Monique Wilson. Alex Saunders, although initiated as first degree by Pat Kopanski, later claimed third degree status
by hereditary initiation. Vivienne Crowley has been initiated
in both the Alexandrian and Gardnerian traditions." ..... Monique is said " in 1964 or 5 she initiated Ray Buckland, who with his wife Rosemary (later divorced), was very influential in the development of the Wicca in the USA."

Dr. Gardner left all of his wealth, the museum and his belongings to Monica upon his death. She and her husband Campbell ran the museum for around 6 years after that, and faced with financial burdens sold the contents to Ripley's Believe it or Not. This was in that collection. Earlier in this sale, we sold Item # 665 Silver Witches bracelet. We did not know at that time the identification of the monogram hand chased on it.. We now know from Ripley's documentation (included with the purchase of this item) that these are the same as on this seal. The LW conjoined and inside the O could very well be L= Lady O= Olwen and W =Wilson. The other engraved symbols are Upside down star with triangle below and point on point triangle. Triangle above ctr. monogram and then another star pointed up with the point on point triangles again. These are Geomantic characters takes from The Magus. The point on point triangles are said to represent "Diabolo, male/Female sexuality" The single triangle is the symbol that Gardner gave for use by his top initiates only.

Monique apparently took her name from the Arthurian
KILHWCH AND OLWEN or the TWRCH TRWYTH (Translation by Lady Charlotte Guest)
